"English Bar" January

No Booking Required

What kind of event?

Once a month we invite a foreign guest who is doing something creative in Tokyo to share their experiences. The event becomes a gathering of like minded people discussing a variety of issues, in English. Stimulated by new information, new people and new discussion.

 January Guest: Heidrun Holzfeind
Heidrun Holzfeind is an Austrian artist who is interested in architecture as a social space and how it interacts with people's everyday life. She questions immanent architectural and social utopias, exploring the borders between history and identity, individual histories and political narratives of the present.

"Tsunami Architecture / The Maldives Chapter" (Christoph Draeger, Heidrun Holzfeind 2013)

Film screening and discussion with Heidrun Holzfiend

In 2010/11 Christoph Draeger and Heidrun Holzfeind visited Southeast Asia to investigate the current state of architecture built or reconstructed in the aftermath of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. "Tsunami Architecture" documents the long-term effects of the disaster through conversations with the surviviors , eyewitnesses, aid workers and rescue personnel. "Maldives Chapter Redux" looks specifically at how the flood of aid money has transformed whole islands, rebuilt and refashioned local economies and shaped communities on three islands in the Maldives. Produced for the 55th Venice Biennale, 2013.
